[Current Music |Smashing Pumpkins - The End is the Beginning is the End]

One of my top five songs of all time:  Smashing Pumpkins - The End is the Beginning is the End

Send a heartbeat to
The void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
For now we stand alone
The world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate
With no more to hate

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in its pain

Delivered from the blast
The last of a line of lasts
The pale princess of a palace cracked
And now the kingdom comes
Crashing down undone
And I am a master of a nothing place
Of recoil and grace

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in its pain

Time has stopped before us
The sky cannot ignore us
No one can separate us
For we are all that is left
The echo bounces off me
The shadow lost beside me
There's no more need to pretend
Cause now I can begin again

Is it bright where you are
And have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in its hate
Strange
Strange
Strange
(strange)
(strange)

Not only is the song amazing, but the lyrics alone are phenomenal.  O_.

Keira Knightley in an ad protesting domestic violence. [Apr. 2nd, 2009|11:29 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/video/2009/apr/02/womens-aid-keira-knightley-ad

This ad caught my eye, because not only did it feature a girl that was not a housewife or waiting girlfriend (indicating that domestic violence does not necessitate 'domesticated' victims), but it also was quite clever in its execution, making it even more chilling.

8 good things - day 1 [Feb. 10th, 2009|07:12 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | working]

I totally forgot that I was tagged by [info]timetangled :

8 days, 8 things that made you happy each day.

I guess I should start now:

Day 1:

1. I did relatively well on my organic chemistry II exam.  Not as amazing as I wanted it to be, but definitely better than I thought after I actually took the exam.  It could have been worse, is all I'm saying.

2. At my research internship, I finished my first sequence file, from designing it to suit the experiment to placing the finishing touches on the initial protocol that appears before the hour-long experiment.  It is for an EEG experiment, which is super cool.

3. Also at work, I got a calendar that marked neuroscience conventions all over the world for the year of 2009.  It had close-ups of really pretty astrocytes and neurons and microglia, and I was in synaptic heaven.  Granted one of my mentors did not want it cluttering her desk, but I was more than happy to take it off her hands.  Who knows?  Maybe this summer, I can visit one of the conventions...

4. I finally had a chance to wear my electric blue eyeliner, and it worked for me!

5. For lunch (and dinner) I had food from Masala Wok, and it was crazy-good.  tandooripaneerwrapnomnomnom.

6. I found out today that I can go to Urban Ballet tomorrow at the Activity Center.  woo!

7. Tomorrow, I'll finally be done with my first round of exams!

8. My driving was flawless today.  The slightly crooked parking totally does not count.

I tag...anyone?

[Current Music |The Veronicas - Untouched]

I swore that I would stop reading fanfiction about two years ago, and I almost came through with that.

The reason why I didn't.

Please read it.

Seriously.  It's gorgeous and sad and...and...GUH.

Rarely do I cry when I read online stuff, especially fanfiction, but this is...definitely worth it.

And while you're at it, read her other stuff.  I WISH I COULD WRITE AS WELL AS HER, BAH.

[Current Music |Elijah Bossenbroek - I Give Up]

Oh.  My.  God.

Please listen to...at least the first two songs.  It's so gorgeous and lush and moving and, well, I am brought to tears.

It reminds me of sunlight and fog and the dawn.

I'm definitely asking Mom to let me download both of his CDs from iTunes, since I can't find them on Limewire.

IF SOMEONE SAYS, "IS THIS OKAY," YOU SAY?
"Breathe" - Anna Nalick
(What?  I panic a lot...)

WHAT WOULD BEST DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
"I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" - Panic! At the Disco
(ahhh... heh heh heh; sins are the atrocities you inflict upon other people; tragedies are the atrocities you inflict upon yourself.  I think most humans would rather hurt others than themselves...)

WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN A GUY/GIRL?
“A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More Kiss Me" - Fall Out Boy
(Oh.  My.  God.  Kinda...true.  "What are you waiting for/Kiss her, kiss her."  People should stop overthinking things because it ruins the good things and makes the bad things worse.  Just kiss her.  Or me.  Please?  :p)

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S PURPOSE?
"Do You Believe In Magic" - The Lovin' Spoonful
(As weird as it sounds, it's true.  I'm a firm believer in the idea that the human spirit can do anything to which it sets its mind.  The cynical attitude of mine comes in when people fail to rise above their crap in order to do so.)

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?
"On Top" - The Killers
(...anyone who knows me in real life knows that I love the top.  I love being at the best of my game and become fiercely competitive when I really want something.)

WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS THINK OF YOU?
"We Takin' Over" - DJ Khaled
(...that I'm completely badass?  :p)

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT VERY OFTEN?
"9 Crimes" - Damien Rice
(This song encompasses loneliness, isolation, lost dreams, and broken relationships.  I cannot say that I think about these things constantly, but they are concepts that I am sure everyone, including me, think about quite often.)

WHAT IS 2+2?
"Eight of Nine" - The Ataris
(At least it has numbers?)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR BEST FRIEND?
"Summer Shudder" - AFI
(...I don't really have a best friend, but the people I keep close to me are the ones with whom I keep tumultuous and emotional relationship.  Kind of like what this song describes.)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PERSON YOU LIKE?
"Vienna" - The Fray
(Very depressing.  This song is about...well, missed chances, leaving each other forever, but never having a chance to say good bye, and the dark clutter it leaves behind.  "There's really no way to reach me/'cause I'm already gone"...  So, yea.  If it counts for anything, I used to think this about the person I used to like.)

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE STORY?
"So Happy Together" - The Turtles
(...I am a huge romantic.  I always want to be with someone, because the lack of stuff I share with my close friends, I share in excess with the person with whom I share a relationship.)

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?
"Savin' Me" - Nickelback
(I want to become a doctor and help people in third-world countries, because their lives need uplifting.  And, perhaps, along the way, in helping them, I can help myself find another piece of happiness and fulfillment.  Selflessness is also a bit selfish, you see.)

WHAT DO YOU THINK WHEN YOU SEE THE PERSON YOU LIKE?
"Vienna" - Billy Joel
(haha, same names, completely different songs.  I want to enjoy life nice and slow when I'm with that kind of person, so I suppose I would think about this...)

WHAT DO YOUR PARENTS THINK OF YOU?
"Hallelujah" - Paramore
(Uhhh.)

WHAT WILL YOU DANCE TO AT YOUR WEDDING?
"You" - Lloyd
(hahahahaha, sensual and catchy and TOTAL grind music.  Fuck yes!  It's not dirty if you're marrying the guy.  ;p)

WHAT WILL THEY PLAY AT YOUR FUNERAL?
"Ain't No Other Man" - Christina Aguilera
("Do yo' thing, honey"...  HAAHAHAHAHA, completely.)

WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY/INTEREST?
"Give It Up to Me" - Sean Paul
(...uhm, bartering with guys about my chastity? My willingness to sex them up?  No.  No.  No.)

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SECRET?
"Stronger" - Kanye West
(...like that's a secret.  :D)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR FRIENDS?
"Bellydancer" - Akon
(That they are sexy little mamas.  Duh.  My friends are HOT.  ;D)

WHAT'S THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN?
"Freek-a-leek" - Petey Pablo
(...I become a prostitute with a sugar daddy like the one they describe in the song?  *shudder*)

HOW WILL YOU DIE?
"Hey, There, Delilah" - Plain White T's
(Pining for someone else?  Waiting for someone else?  Sad.  D:)

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU REGRET?
"The Interview" - AFI
(uhm.  I dunno.  The songs speaks of regret though...)

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH?
"Pop" - N'Sync
(...I love N'Sync)

WHAT MAKES YOU CRY?
"Your Guardian Angel" - The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
(...this song makes me cry; it's...tender and warm and sad and beautiful.)

WILL YOU EVER GET MARRIED?
"Kehna Hi Kya" - from "Bombay"
(...yes.  :))

WHAT SCARES YOU THE MOST?
"Clothes Off" - Gym Class Heroes
(...quite the opposite.  XD)

DOES ANYONE LIKE YOU?
“Bartender" - T-Pain
(...apparently when I mix drinks for them.)

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?
"There's Gotta Be More to Life" - Stacy Orrico
(I wish I was more focused and planned things better, so I could've gotten farther earlier.)

WHAT HURTS RIGHT NOW?
"Love Like Winter" - AFI
(uhm, love, according to this song.  ._O)

I tag anyone.

And I got tired of music for a bit, so I didn't want a song to post this to, although that's the last question.

Palin, McCain's veep, believes in abstinence-only education in school.

Palin's daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant at the age of seventeen.

This is not a reason to smear her.
She's seventeen, goddammit.  She is not the epitome of what happens when you have abstinence-only education, because when people have sex, they adhere to their own set of rules, not necessarily what the school prescribes for them.

Having abstinence-only education won't necessarily make people have kids that they don't want (and forcibly get married), just like having a nitty-gritty sex ed will not necessarily make students more promiscuous.  The important difference between these two types of education, however, is the fact that the latter allows for more options that are promoted by the school.  There are always options, but this type of education allows for most students to know them in a world where ignorance is a poison.

I doubt Bristol wanted to get pregnant.  Most teenage girls would rather not have that burden.  But don't you dare try to use her situation as a way to progress your own.  Must I remind you: she's seventeen.  Moreover, I think she had an awful lot of courage to share this with her family, who recently took on a very precarous position with the world.  It's just plain fucking mean to tell her family, to tell her, "Haha, I told you so."  When did Bristol's choices take the place of her mother's and her mother's party?  When did getting pregnant as a teen become the effect of abstinence-only education?  To do such a thing is like equating abortion to pro-choice.  It is limiting.  It takes away choice, a choice to have sex (and have a kid) when you feel ready, not when the school deems you ready; a choice to choose to keep your pregnancy, even as you vote for Roe vs. Wade.

We need to make decisions that allow for options, that allow for choices.  And while I do believe that abstinence-only education is very weak, it is not the reason she became pregnant.  It is not a reason to ridicule her.

So shut up.
